Dear University of Central Florida Faculty and Administrators:

1. I write to remind you to have your best undergraduate and graduate students apply to the SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program. The application deadline is December 15, 2009 for Fall 2010 starts. Applications must be done on-line at www.asee.org/SMART. This is a highly-selective, prestigious, national program that fully supports their education, including full tuition and a very generous stipend in the range of $25,000 a year for undergraduates and $41,000 for doctoral candidates, while they are in school. It also includes a book allowance of $1,000 a year, health insurance, summer internships, and travel fees for internships. Students must be U.S. Citizens, able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance, and be willing to work in a defense laboratory upon graduation. There will be approximately 300 new awards this year.

For more information about the program and application process, please refer your students to www.asee.org/smart.

2. If you or other faculty at your university would like to help evaluate the applications of SMART students, you or your faculty can apply on line at: http://panelists.asee.org/ to serve on the "SMART Ranking Panel", which will be held in Washington D.C. at the end of January, 2010. Generally it is best to have a department's Undergraduate or Graduate coordinator(s)/advisor(s) serve on this panel.

Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Knox
DoD Executive Agent for SMART
